In some movies, the props are just as big stars as the actors themselves. The gadgets that have appeared throughout the Mission Impossible movies are a good example. This Tom Cruise-led franchise has featured dangerous missions, amazing stunts, and international intrigue. At the same time, you can also find some pretty amazing spy gadgets throughout the series.
When it comes to movie gadgets, if you find yourself saying something like “I wish I had one of those!”, then there’s a good chance that you’re talking about something that’s pretty cool.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF buddies have been through a lot, over the course of five films (soon to be six) and 20 years. There is no question that without some of the following gadgets to help them along, they wouldn’t have been nearly as successful as they were:
1.Electromagnetic Gloves (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol): One of the most extraordinary scenes in the fourth film concerns Ethan’s climb along the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest skyscraper on the planet, utilizing electromagnetic gloves. These specialized gloves essentially give Ethan the power to climb and move like Spiderman.
2.Auto Lock Pick (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation): The latest release in the franchise was hailed for exceptional action sequences, ongoing suspense, and some of the coolest gadgets to be used in the series thus far. For a lot of people, the straightforward, endlessly neat auto lock pick stands as the best item in the latest chapter.
3. Grapple gun (Mission Impossible): It’s hard to believe the first film in this revival of the classic TV series is now twenty years old. Nonetheless, some of the gadgets hold up quite nicely, even after so many years. The grappling hook isn’t flashy, and it might even be a little gross, but if you need to discreetly get someone out of the room, it can prove to be a lifesaver.
4.Scanner Contact Lenses (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol): How does the ability to scan and send off crucial information, using nothing but a pair of contact lenses, sound to you? Many of the best gadgets in the films are the ones that allow Ethan or anyone else from the IMF team to get in and get out without detection. The scanner contact lenses are a great example of that thought.
5.Mask Machine (Mission Impossible III): The Mask Machine is something of a throwback to one of the oldest and best-loved elements of subterfuge in the entire MI universe. The concept was brilliantly executed in the third film, with a device that could take precise information regarding the features and other unique characteristics of an individual’s face. The face could then be created and imposed onto an individual, taking the element of disguise to a whole new level.
When’s The Next Mission?
What kind of gadgets can we expect with the next film in the series? A sixth entry is expected to be released soon, so we’re just going to have to wait to find out.

I like all the gadgets in these films. Some I like enough to make a working model of them. Like the double key… The real hard part of this is to make a lock that it opens. So far, I’ve made a cross hole or “X” hole in a metal box that the key can fit into, but no pins for it to actuate.
I might need to go see my local locksmith. R.
